If you must use canned foods with added salt, like beans, peas, corn or prickles, rinse before eating to reduce some of the sodium. If you have purchased a can and the food within has high sodium levels, no need to chuck it. Instead, drain the can, then rinse the foods to reduce the sodium.
Your body needs a small amount of sodium to function, but too much sodium can be harmful to your health. Diets higher in sodium are associated with increased risk of developing high blood pressure, which is a major cause of stroke and heart disease.
